Across the waters of Pamlico Sound, Lane began work on the first English fort to be built on mainland America. It was soon done, with work beginning on 27 July 1585 and completed by 17 August. The time taken, compared with that to erect the temporary forts in the West Indies, coupled with the easy to work sandy Roanoke soil, indicates that the defences were well planned and well constructed. Unfortunately Lane neither described nor did White draw this historically most significant building. The former spent more time writing inflammatory criticisms of Grenville than he did in describing his own work – an irrational behaviour that also set a trend whereby the English put as much fervour into finding fault with each other as they did in fighting their true foes. However, on 3 September 1585, Lane ended a letter to Richard Hakluyt with the words ‘From the new Fort in Virginia’.
